The Comeback of the Scrunchie: A Nostalgic Fashion Icon
At BAKR&BERG, we love scrunchies. For many of us, they bring back nostalgic memories, like that time your mother or grandmother made a scrunchie that perfectly matched your favorite dress. Cheerful colors, diverse fabrics, and endless possibilities to style your hair—that's what makes the scrunchie so special. That's why we at BAKR&BERG designed our own line of scrunchies.
Scrunchies are not only stylish, but also practical. They keep your hair out of your face during your daily facial care and look great as a bun or headband. Our scrunchies, made of Mulberry 22 silk, ensure that your hair stays healthy and looks beautiful. No damage, no metal, no dents and no wrinkles.
The History of the Scrunchie
Did you know that the scrunchie originated in the 1960s? In 1987, Rommy Hunt Revson patented the scrunchie as a softer alternative to metal hair ties. She created the first scrunchie using a simple sewing machine and named it "Scunci" after her toy poodle. The name was later changed to scrunchie, referring to how the fabric crinkles.
The Popularity in the 80s and 90s
Scrunchies were a huge hit in the 80s and 90s. They were less damaging to hair and fit in perfectly with the colorful fashions of the time. Celebrities like Janet Jackson and Sarah Jessica Parker wore them, and Madonna even made a statement with a large velvet scrunchie in "Desperately Seeking Susan."
Away for a while, but back again!
In the early 2000s, the scrunchie began to decline in popularity, partly due to a comment on "Sex and the City" in which Carrie Bradshaw mocked the scrunchie: “No woman … would be caught dead at a hip downtown restaurant wearing a scrunchie.” But fashion is cyclical, and in the late 2010s, the scrunchie made a glorious comeback. They have appeared on the runways again, such as during New York Fashion Week in 2017, and have been worn by fashion icons like Hailey Bieber, Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez.
Gen-Z and Our Daughters
The scrunchie has also made its way to the younger generation. It’s become an essential part of the VSCO girl aesthetic, a trend that’s popular on TikTok. Scrunchies are even reportedly being swapped between crushes.
At BAKR&BERG we believe that the scrunchie will never disappear from the fashion scene. Our daughters are already fans! With our silk scrunchies you give your hair the care it deserves, while looking stylish. Discover our collection and experience for yourself why this classic hair accessory is back!
