Interview with pharmacist Sawen Bakr on science-based skincare
In a recent interview with KennisConnect, pharmacist Sawen Bakr, co-founder of BAKR&BERG, shares her vision on skin health, science and entrepreneurship. She explains how her many years of experience in pharmacy and health advice led to the development of a skincare brand where beauty meets science.
'The impact of skin health on wellness and self-confidence is enormous,' says Sawen. 'I wanted to create products that not only work, but truly help people feel good in their skin.'
Where science and beauty converge
The skin tells a story about health, well-being and self-confidence.
For pharmacist Sawen Bakr, co-founder of BAKR&BERG, skincare is much more than cosmetics: it is a form of self-care built on science. In a recent interview with KennisConnect she described how her medical background and passion for skincare converge in a brand that combines clinical efficacy with beauty and simplicity.
From pharmacy to laboratory: how science forms the basis of skincare
With many years of experience in pharmacy, Sawen witnessed daily the challenges of people dealing with sensitive or blemish-prone skin. That drove a clear mission: to develop scientifically backed skincare, without unnecessary additives or empty claims.
Together with doctor Margreeth van den Berg she founded BAKR&BERG — a brand where dermatologically tested skincare and pharmaceutical expertise come together.
'Our products are dermatologist-tested, microplastic-free and safe for sensitive skin,' says Sawen. 'Every ingredient has a specific purpose and is supported by scientific data. We believe that effective skincare starts with knowledge.'
The art of formulation: effective and skin-friendly
Developing a cream or serum may seem simple, but behind every formula lies a complex process.
Each product begins with extensive literature and market research, followed by clinical evaluations and stability tests.
'The greatest challenge is to combine powerful active ingredients, such as retinol, niacinamide or vitamin C, without causing irritation' according to Sawen.
Moreover, sustainability is an important guiding principle.
'We want to create products that are both effective and responsible. That means: no microplastics, no unnecessary silicones and packaging that optimally protects our active ingredients.'
The result: skincare that unites science, safety and aesthetics. Precisely what BAKR&BERG stands for.
From vision to growth
What began as an idea between two healthcare professionals is now growing into a brand with international ambition.
BAKR&BERG initially targets pharmacies and clinics, where the medical background of the brand is directly understood and appreciated.
'Our products are a natural complement to medical treatments,' explains Sawen. 'We want customers to know: this is skincare that truly delivers on its promise.'
The next step? Further expansion of the product range and international distribution.
'Our dream is to be available worldwide for everyone seeking safe, reliable and clinically proven skincare.'
Skincare as a form of self-care
For Sawen, skincare goes further than just a daily routine.
'Skincare is self-care. It’s investing in yourself, in what feels good and does good. It gives calm, balance and self-confidence.'
Her inspiration comes from pioneers such as Estée Lauder, for her vision and entrepreneurial spirit, and L’Oréal, for combining innovation with accessibility.
Both examples show that success in the beauty world stems from knowledge, consistency and trust—core values that are reflected in every BAKR&BERG product.
